Gemini Go is official, even the most affordable smartphones have AI

Generative artificial intelligence ceases to be exclusive to high-end devices and is set to reach a considerably broader user base.

Google has officially announced the arrival of Gemini Go, a lighter and optimized variant of its advanced assistant, designed specifically for smartphones equipped with Android Go Edition.

This represents an important step for the industry, as it brings conversational and automation tools even to modest hardware, typically characterized by limited storage space and processors less powerful than today’s standards.

The new system will permanently replace the previous Google Assistant Go application, integrating directly into the classic Google Search app.

Regarding the technical specifications required for operation, the company requires at least 2 GB of RAM. This threshold, having become a mandatory requirement starting with Android Go version 13, already today guarantees a wide range of compatible smartphones on the global market.

User interaction has been kept simple and immediate: to summon the assistant, a long press on the device’s Home button is enough, or, for models that support it, holding down the power button.

A versatile assistant for daily use

Despite the necessary optimization to weigh less on the smartphone’s resources, the software’s capabilities remain substantial and cover various aspects of daily life.

The software allows you to make calls or dictate text messages. It is also particularly useful for personal organization, allowing you to set alarms, manage calendar events and provide precise travel-time guidance to reach your workplace.

The features extend to the ability to identify specific restaurants or nearby EV charging stations.

On the entertainment front, the user can request playback of music tracks based on particular moods or physical activities. A detail of great importance is the AI’s ability to process documents, photos and other files uploaded directly in the chat, returning accurate and relevant answers based on the material provided.

Distribution and release timelines

As is common with software updates of this scale, the rollout of the new assistant is happening gradually.

Global distribution will follow in subsequent phases, so owners of eligible devices should not panic if the option does not appear right away.

It may indeed take a few weeks before the update reaches all compatible smartphones in circulation.
