iPhone Ultra isn’t out yet, but talk of its successor has already begun

Apple is preparing to debut in the foldable smartphones sector by the end of the year, a step long awaited by analysts, investors and enthusiasts.

However, the real news emerging these days concerns the timelines and long-term plans of the Californian company. According to the rumors collected by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Cupertino’s executives are already actively working on the second generation of iPhone Ultra, whose commercial release is set for 2027.

Such planning unequivocally indicates that the imminent launch is not considered a simple market test, but the first piece of a long-term industrial commitment.

The second-generation model, currently identified in internal documents with the codename V78, is expected to be unveiled just one year after the debut of the original version.

The year 2027 represents a deeply symbolic date for the company, as it will coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the first iPhone. This overlap suggests a well-calculated strategic plan aimed at consolidating the new product type, establishing it as a fixed and top-tier presence in the brand’s annual lineup.

The prolonged wait over these years has allowed engineers to observe the moves of manufacturers such as Google, Honor and Oppo, studying their hardware cycles carefully.

Analyzing the details emerged from some physical replicas of the first iPhone Ultra, the chosen approach is decidedly specific. The foldable smartphone should mount an external display of 5.5 inches paired with a main internal panel of 7.8 inches, characterized by an aspect ratio of 4:3.

This proportion favors a body that is slightly wider and less slender than the initial generations of competing devices, more reminiscent of the lines of a compact tablet.

When fully opened, the available visual space closely approaches that of an iPad mini, whose screen measures 8.3 inches.

The market aligns with the new form factors

Apple’s careful consideration of proportions seems to have convinced even those who have been in the industry much longer. Samsung, the company that first believed in foldable displays, is reconsidering the form factors of its main devices.

Leak information from the Asian supply chain indicate that the South Korean house is preparing a significantly wider design for next year. It is said to be a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide destined to become the standard configuration, while a variant under development more vertical would take the name of Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

While awaiting the verdict of sales data before declaring the bet won, the existence of the V78 project demonstrates considerable internal confidence. Turning the foldable into a stable pillar of the catalog, supported by regular annual iterations, will require an imposing technical commitment, but will guarantee the company a strong and structured presence in the most expensive segment of consumer electronics.
