Google is preparing an important update for its home computer application for Apple Macs, introducing AI-based agents capable of operating directly on the operating system.

Until now, the presence of Gemini on macOS has been limited to two main functions: a native conversational interface, very similar to the browser-accessible one, and a handy keyboard shortcut to summon the program at any time.

This tool already offers a notable advantage, as it allows sharing the active window in that specific moment, providing the software a fundamental visual context to understand the ongoing activities.

However, recent rumors indicate that the company intends to push much further. The aim is to compete directly with advanced tools like Claude Cowork, introducing a form of interaction where the agent takes direct control of the machine to complete specific tasks, moving autonomously within the user’s documents.

Direct interaction and practical commands

This new mode of use will be based on deep integration with the system. By leveraging screen access features and macOS accessibility settings, the virtual agent will be able to display the screen, control the mouse cursor and type on the keyboard.

The welcome to this new operating environment will be the message: “Let’s work together. What are you working on?“.

From here, the user will have several options to manage their work. One possible first instruction is “Convert my files into a spreadsheet“, asking the system to scan a local folder such as invoices or reports, extract the data and structure them in a Google Sheet. In a completely analogous way, it will be possible to use the command “Organize my folders” so that the AI can find unorganized files in the Desktop or Downloads folder, group them by type or context, and archive the mess.

The operational capabilities will also extend to managing the names of individual files. The option “Standardize my files” will allow instructing the system to read file metadata and batch rename hundreds of chaotic files into clean and readable subfolders.

In addition to organizing local data, the assistant will interface with the entire enterprise productivity ecosystem, allowing the user to make the request “Close the loop on my last meeting“. In response to this command, the agent will fetch the latest Meet transcript or the notes from Google Docs from my last meeting and draft a follow-up email with the highlights and the actions to be taken.

An expansive productivity strategy

The leaked features highlight a strong focus on organizing files on Macs, combined with deep integration into Google Workspace applications. It is particularly interesting to note how this desktop-oriented implementation seems to promise capabilities clearly superior to smartphone counterparts.

Currently, in fact, only a limited number of mobile devices, such as the Galaxy S26 series, have the requirements to ask Gemini to perform simple automatic operations within applications, such as ordering food for delivery.

The introduction of these advanced automation features on desktop computers represents the culmination of a testing phase started last year with the preview named Gemini 2.5 Computer Use.

The transformation of the macOS application into a true virtual operator marks a long-awaited step, positioning itself to become an indispensable work tool for all professionals and companies relying on Google Workspace’s integrated services.
