Your iPhone is stolen and locks itself automatically; Apple is preparing the security feature

Imagine walking down the street, perhaps while reading a message or consulting a map on your iPhone. Suddenly, someone runs past you, snatches the device from your hands and disappears.

This scenario, unfortunately common in urban centers, represents one of the main fears for those who own high-value devices.

Apple, deeply aware of this security-critical issue related to petty crime, is developing an advanced security system to protect its customers precisely in these situations.

Currently, users can rely on highly effective tools to prevent fraudulent use of their device. Built-in features, such as the Activation Lock tied to the network Dov’u00e8, effectively make it impossible to reset and configure the smartphone as new without first entering the owner’s email address and password.

Obviously, this mechanism does not stop thieves from attempting social engineering or phishing campaigns to extort credentials from the user, which is why it is essential never to share your data.

In addition, there is the function for the protection of the stolen device, which raises another defensive wall. When the user is far from familiar places, such as their home or workplace, changing sensitive settings — such as changing the password, disabling the localization systems or accessing saved passwords — requires biometric authentication via Face ID, imposes a forced one-hour wait, and requires a subsequent confirmation.

All these defenses, however, present a physiological weak point: if the offender snatches the smartphone while it is already unlocked in the victim’s hands, the software barriers lose part of their effectiveness.

How will the automatic lock work?

To close this gap once and for all, California engineers are working on a solution that relies on the device’s hardware, in a manner similar to what Android introduced with its Theft Detection Lock.

Through the use of the accelerometer and other movement sensors, the system will be able to recognize the kinetic dynamics typical of a snatch. As soon as the device senses it has been forcibly snatched from the rightful owner’s hands, the software will instantly lock the screen.

The protection will become even more meticulous for those wearing an Apple Watch paired. The system, in fact, will constantly monitor the distance between the watch and the smartphone to determine that the theft has occurred.

In case of sudden and rapid departure into an area not recognized as safe, the strict restrictions provided by the protection of the stolen device will automatically trigger. This lightning-fast lock guarantees the victim the precious and necessary time to contact their bank, inform financial institutions and freeze accounts before the thief can commit illicit operations.

The resale value and upcoming developments

It’s no coincidence that iPhones with the Apple logo have historically been criminals’ preferred prey. The main reason lies in the extraordinary retention of their commercial value.

Unlike many competing devices that suffer rapid devaluation over time, an iPhone maintains a decidedly high resale price on the black market or abroad, even years after launch.

Recent analyses of early versions of operating systems indicate that the code strings related to this new anti-snatch feature are already in active development.

Although an official timeline for widespread distribution is still missing, the implementation of this technology addresses a concrete urgency, offering an essential shield for all those who could fall victim to the widespread technique of “grab and go”.
