Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, increases the L2 cache and with it performance

The smartphone sector is preparing to welcome a truly formidable contender with the arrival of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.

If the current Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 had already marked a significant step forward, boasting 12MB of L2 cache shared between its two clusters, the new model aims to surpass this limit.

The most recent information indicates, in fact, that the future Qualcomm platform will adopt a configuration capable of offering the highest amount of L2 cache ever seen on a smartphone SoC.

Unlike the previous generation, the previews reveal that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will implement a triple CPU cluster, organized in a seven-core overall configuration, split into a 2+2+3 layout. It is this specific arrangement that benefits from the memory increase, being able to draw on as much as 16 MB of shared L2 cache (for a total of 48 MB when summing the three clusters).

Other specifications from the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station confirm technical continuity for the other memory areas: the chip will keep 8 MB dedicated to the System-Level Cache (SLC) and 18 MB available to the graphics subsystem (GMEM).

This conservative choice on SLC and GPU memory suggests that engineers have identified the L2 cache as the main bottleneck to overcome in order to unlock higher performance.

Efficiency and Responsiveness

The increase in L2 cache translates into real benefits for users. By having access to a larger pool of internal memory closer to the cores, the processor drastically reduces latency times.

This means that the cores won’t need to stay active for long to retrieve the necessary data, a factor that reflects very positively on overall energy efficiency. Shorter processing times directly translate to lower battery consumption.

In practical terms, applications will be able to take advantage of the larger memory to boot much faster, cutting loading times and delivering an extremely smooth interaction.

The gaming sector will also greatly benefit from this update: titles with high-resolution textures will be able to maintain a high and constant frame rate, ensuring a smooth gaming experience.

In addition to the internal structural upgrade, the processor will boast full support for the new LPDDR6 RAM memories, a feature that will guarantee a further increase in the system-wide available bandwidth.
