OnePlus and realme will become one entity? Major changes within OPPO

Until recently, the prospects for OnePlus seemed stable, but rumors about a possible withdrawal from some international markets started circulating as early as 2023.

If at first these rumors had been categorically denied by the company’s top management, the early months of 2026 brought the issue back to the surface with even greater force.

Through unofficial channels, a narrative emerges that is very different from the usual administration communicated outward. Several sources, including the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station via Weibo, report that OnePlus and realme have formally merged.

This strategic overhaul is of enormous proportions for both companies, which share the same parent company OPPO.

Current information indicates that the two divisions will unify their respective operations both globally and with regard to the Chinese domestic market. Marketing activities, customer services, and development will converge into a brand-new center dedicated to sub-products.

This new and imposing organizational structure will report directly to Pete Lau, a historic figure within the group and a highly prominent executive. A detail particularly significant to this operation concerns the company’s willingness to aggressively pursue the reuse of production lines, thereby optimizing costs.

To better frame the whole situation, it is useful to remember that OnePlus has been operating for years as a sub-brand of OPPO, while realme has also recently integrated in an increasingly close manner into the Chinese brand’s organizational structure at the beginning of the current year.

Mercati internazionali e l’incertezza sul futuro

While realme has built over the past decade a solid reputation for offering devices with excellent value for money and, alongside smartphones, also smartwatches, tablets and televisions, its geographic footprint shows substantial differences compared to that of OnePlus.

For example, realme does not operate in the United States, a territory where, by contrast, OnePlus has invested significant resources for a long time. In Europe, however, the situation for OnePlus appears decidedly critical.

Recent reports indicate a serious assessment of the brand’s future in the Old Continent, with dismantling operations already starting from April and significant staff cuts. The absence of new smartphones announced for foreign markets in recent months is another clear sign of this transitional phase.

Even the recent unveiling of the new smartwatch OnePlus Watch 4 took place in a rather unusual way, without giving the press and consumers any concrete details on release timelines, list prices, or actual launch plans.

Le implicazioni per il settore

Although there have not yet been any definitive official statements, the signs of a major international downsizing of OnePlus continue to mount day after day. The union of forces with realme could represent OPPO’s ultimate strategy to rationalize its financial resources and keep its global competitiveness intact in the challenging mobile market.

What remains to be seen now is how the respective hardware catalogs will be managed and whether the famous OnePlus name will be able to survive as a distinct identity, or whether it will be progressively absorbed by the group’s new commercial directives.

The coming weeks will certainly provide the answers to clarify the actual scope of these maneuvers.
