In the tech world things can change quickly – after all we’re talking about a dynamic sector that relies on progress – and yet such a rapid shift has never happened before. A new rumor contradicts Samsung’s leadership and claims that the Galaxy Z TriFold successor will happen. And that’s not all, because it also previews what will be the distinctive aspects of the future tri-foldable!
A Korean insider claims that in reality the company is already working on the second generation: the commercial name isn’t known yet, so we’ll refer to the device provisionally as Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2.
On board there would be a renewed dual hinge, which would have already passed most verification tests. The device is planned for around mid-2027 and would have a thinner and lighter build.
Recall that the current Galaxy Z TriFold measures 3.9 mm when open and 12.9 mm when closed, for a weight of 309 grams. According to the insider the new phone will be only slightly thicker than Galaxy Z Fold 7, so we’re talking about around 8.9 mm when closed and a weight of 215 grams.
Unfortunately, there are few details on the specifications, but for a smartphone of this kind the important thing is the form factor, along with structural improvements. The Asian brand’s innovations wouldn’t end there: Samsung would also be working on a device extendable based on the display Slidable Flex.
This type of screen was shown for the first time at CES 2022: it is an extendable horizontal panel, with a look similar to the OPPO X 2021 concept. Samsung’s future phone, therefore, would benefit from a display capable of extending to increase the viewing area.
However, it seems there will be a big change from what has been seen so far: instead of a motorized system, Samsung’s first rollable would instead have a manual scrolling mechanism. Once extended, the display would reach a generous 7″ diagonal.
For now it’s being talked about as a prototype and the company isn’t yet certain about the commercial launch. The announcement is expected between late 2027 and early 2028, but — according to the leaker — for now it’s still to be seen whether Samsung will decide to proceed with the development of the handset.
