iPhone Fold will have foldable glass on both sides of the display

The anticipation for the first foldable smartphone branded by Apple continues to grow, steadily fueled by new rumors about the complex design choices of the Cupertino-based company.

One of the most critical aspects in the realization of foldables is undoubtedly the center crease of the display, an aesthetic compromise that manufacturers have long been trying to mitigate.

According to the latest information circulating online from the informant Digital Chat Station, the upcoming device, provisionally known as iPhone Fold, will adopt a very particular solution to overcome this obstacle: the use of a double layer of ultra-thin glass.

This architecture entails embedding the display securely between two thin sheets of protective glass. The decision to adopt such a structure aims to prevent the screen from coming into direct contact with the inner hinge mechanism.

Such physical isolation has been studied to preserve the component’s integrity over time, drastically improving its resistance to wear and ensuring that the center crease remains almost imperceptible even after thousands of open/close cycles.

To strengthen the product’s durability, additional measures will be taken. Among these, the use of a self-healing glass, capable of autonomously absorbing superficial micro-scratches, and a smoothly flowing hinge design, engineered to integrate perfectly with the frame lines, concealing the mechanical joints.

Collaborations and display performance

To achieve such high manufacturing standards, the California-based company appears to have relied on the experience of established partners.

Information leaked last month suggests that the internal panel will be supplied by Samsung and will stand out for a crease depth of just 0.15 mm. Moreover, the technology behind the screen should borrow some of the successful characteristics already seen on the OPPO Find N6, promising top-level performance and an optimal surface finish.

The device is expected to be generous in size, characterized by a relatively wider aspect ratio than its direct competitors.

Specifically, the iPhone Fold should feature an internal display of 7.8″, offering a wide working area for productivity, paired with an external display of 5.49″, designed to handle routine operations conveniently when the unit is closed.

When is it expected to release and at what price?

The official debut of iPhone Fold is currently planned for the month of September, a time window historically reserved by Apple for flagship product announcements.

Considering the complex engineering phase and the premium materials involved in the project, the expected costs reflect its position in the top tier of the market.

In the United States, the starting price is expected to hover around $1,999, while for the Chinese market a figure close to 15,999 yuan is anticipated. In our region it could reach nearly €2,200.
