After a month of uncertainty and degraded video quality, the magic has returned to Disney+. The streaming platform has finally restored support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 3D content across the affected European territory, ending a patent dispute that had forced the House of Mouse to switch off its flagship formats.
Last month the House of Mouse’s streaming platform cut Dolby Vision and HDR10+ in some European countries. Fortunately Italy was not affected by this measure, which overall had a limited duration. Disney attributed technical issues; however the real reason concerns a patent dispute regarding certain technologies.
The result was the halt of Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 3D content, but now it seems that everything has been resolved. The platform has reintroduced the removed formats (they had even removed references to Dolby Vision from the official support pages).
In the end, Disney itself confirmed that the problem originated from the dispute with the American company InterDigital. The outcome was not communicated, but most likely the two parties reached an agreement and as a result the premium formats were again accessible to subscribers. However — despite a disruption lasting more than a month — users did not receive any refunds.
