With the recent release of Android 17 Beta 3, the Google operating system has officially reached platform stability.
Among the immediately visible updates are the separate buttons for enabling cellular data and Wi‑Fi, as well as a revamped “Bubbles” feature designed to optimize the management of multiple apps at once.
However, the most interesting surprises often hide behind the scenes, such as the arrival of a priority charging mode for devices.
Analyzing the system files of the new beta version, experts at Android Authority have identified references to an unreleased feature named “Priority Charging,” i.e., Priority Charging.
Although this option is not yet active or visible to users testing the software, the extracted text strings provide a clear view of how it works. Priority charging is designed to intervene in a timely manner in moments when the time available to connect the smartphone to the power outlet is limited.
Activating it, the operating system temporarily pauses all those non-essential background activities, such as app updates, directing as much energy as possible toward the battery.
Despite the interruption of these secondary processes, core communications remain operational, ensuring the regular reception of calls and text messages.
To fully leverage this acceleration, the code explicitly suggests using a charger capable of delivering high power, recommending a power adapter of at least 30 W or higher.
Obviously, increasing charging speed requires great attention to heat management, a factor extremely critical to the lifespan of electronic components.
Google has anticipated this scenario, incorporating safeguard measures to prevent issues related to high temperatures.
The strings found within the software reassure users, explaining that the smartphone will be able to fully autonomously manage thermal fluctuations, keeping values constantly within the optimal safety thresholds.
As this is a tool discovered exclusively by exploring the code’s intricacies, there are still several unknowns about its real-world behavior. It is not yet known, for example, whether the function will work differently depending on the remaining charge percentage, perhaps adopting different protocols starting from 30% versus a more reassuring 70%.
Moreover, being a measure designed for emergencies, users expect the introduction of a handy command within the Quick Settings menu to use it on the fly.
On the timing front, the incomplete rollout of the function suggests that Priority Charging may not be included in the June stable release of Android 17.
The most concrete hypothesis therefore points to the next update Android 17 QPR1, even if the American company will almost certainly take advantage of the stage at the May conference Google I/O to provide further and eagerly awaited details.
