With the release of the stable version of Android 16 QPR3, commonly known as the March 2026 update, Google has introduced several system changes. However, as often happens when a sizeable software package is distributed, changes are not limited to the obvious additions.
Many owners of smartphone Pixel have indeed noticed the disappearance of a very handy shortcut, related to managing recent apps, which allowed speeding up the operations of saving and visual search.
Until a few weeks ago, the recent apps screen hid a highly appreciated trick by those who knew of its existence.
Long-pressing on an image within the preview of an app, or using the dedicated selection tool, the operating system offered a quick contextual menu. This interface provided immediate options to save the media file, share it with other contacts, or analyze it directly via Google Lens.
It was an elegant solution for downloading content or portions of text without having to reopen the specific app or filling the system memory with unnecessary temporary screenshots.
With the installation of the latest stable release, this convenience has been limited. Tests had already highlighted this change last January, but now its broad rollout has made the change permanent.
Currently, by selecting an image from the recent apps screen, users have at their disposal only the commands to copy, share, and modify the content.
The direct option to save the element has completely vanished, leaving a certain frustration, as evidenced by recent discussions on social platforms such as Reddit.
Despite the absence of the dedicated button, there is still the possibility to save the desired images, though you have to resort to more cumbersome steps. To conserve a media file it is now necessary to open the share menu and look for the option “Save to Photos“, a voice often buried among dozens of other alternatives.
Similarly, it is possible to direct the image to the Files by Google app, although this method involves automatic saving in the Downloads folder. Both paths undoubtedly require more time and interactions than the single tap enjoyed previously.
Even the instant integration with Google Lens has suffered the same fate. Those who want to perform a search from a preview must now rely on the Circle and Search feature, or go back through the share menu and select the Google image search option.
Although alternatives are not lacking, the simplicity of the user experience is compromised, removing a tool that made interacting with the device considerably more immediate.
