After Pixel 10a announcement and the persistent rumors surrounding the upcoming debuts of the iPhone 17e and the Galaxy S26 family, Sony has also decided to claim its share of media attention.
This time, however, it is not about smartphones, but about a long-awaited new arrival in the portable audio sector that could make anyone in the market for a new pair of true wireless headphones.

The Japanese giant has officially announced that February 12 will be the chosen date for the unveiling of its new earbuds. Although the company has kept some secrecy, avoiding explicitly naming the product in promotional material, all clues point in one direction: the arrival of the much-anticipated WF-1000XM6.
The confirmation comes via a short and cryptic video uploaded to YouTube, in which Sony announces the arrival of the “next generation of earbuds“. The visual fragments shown in the teaser correspond unmistakably to the images leaked in the past weeks, dispelling any doubt about the device’s identity.
The event is set for next Thursday, when in Italy it will be 5:00 PM, the moment when the veil will be lifted on the new top-of-the-line earbuds.
A completely redesigned aesthetic
Information emerged so far suggests we will be facing a substantial transformation, especially in terms of design. The new WF-1000XM6 will abandon the circular and compact shape that characterized the previous XM5 model, in favor of a new “pill”-shaped structure.
This change will not only affect the earbuds themselves, but will also extend to the charging case, which will feature more pronounced edges and flat surfaces on both the top and bottom, marking a definite departure from the past.
The aesthetic novelties seem to be functional also to a performance improvement. The render analysis suggests the presence of an additional grille that should hide a microphone, bringing the total to four per earbud.
This choice hints at further refinement of active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency mode, areas where Sony has always excelled but where the competition has become increasingly fierce.
Regarding colors, it is likely that the launch will include three variants, although at the moment only two have been teased by rumors.
Premium positioning expected
One crucial aspect of this launch will be the price, which places the new headphones in a decidedly premium tier. Estimates indicate a launch cost of around 299.99 euros for the European market.
A significant figure, which would place the WF-1000XM6 on a higher price point than direct competitors such as the AirPods Pro 3 and the anticipated Galaxy Buds 4 Pro.
Sony enjoys an unassailable reputation in the world of high-fidelity audio, but today’s challenge is no longer only about the purity of sound or the effectiveness of artificial silence.
In a market dominated by advanced features such as dynamic spatial audio, real-time translation, and biometric sensors for health monitoring, it remains to be seen whether the Japanese company will have in store those distinctive features needed to justify such a high investment and persuade users to look beyond Apple’s and Samsung’s offerings.
