Snapseed camera brings “analog” photography to iPhone, manual controls and film simulations

After a preliminary launch phase that occurred in December, the Snapseed application for iOS devices takes an important evolutionary step, transforming from a simple yet powerful post-production tool into a a real and proper photography app.

The newly released update introduces the possibility of taking photographs directly from inside the application via a new dedicated icon, placed in the upper right.

This change overcomes the previous limit that allowed access to Snapseed’s camera exclusively through the lock screen widgets, the Control Center, or the physical Camera Control button on Apple devices.

The structural novelty of greatest relevance is the introduction of the “PRO” mode, which the user can easily activate via a switch located in the upper-left area of the screen. This feature guarantees full control over the main shooting parameters, providing three new buttons at the bottom of the viewfinder to adjust ISO, shutter speed, and focus.

To make the experience rewarding and intuitive, the interface adopts a skeuomorphic design, reproducing the aesthetics and dynamics of a physical dial to accompany the smooth transition from automatic mode to manual mode.

Also the overall arrangement of the tools has been streamlined: the controls for activating the flash are now conveniently located at the bottom left, while the zoom options are on the opposite side, ensuring optimal ergonomics during one- or two-handed use.

The Real-Time Charm of Analog

Besides allowing the use of presets saved and customized by the user, Snapseed’s camera makes a leap toward vintage photography offering a real-time simulation of some of the most famous historic film stocks.

Available options range from warm and distinctive tones reminiscent of the historic Kodak Portra, Gold and E200, to the vibrant contrasts typical of the Fuji Superia and Pro 400H series.

The simulations also include profiles inspired by black-and-white and the characteristic colors of the Agfa Optima and Scala films, without neglecting bold styles that evoke the legendary Polaroid 600 or the unmistakable cinematic aesthetic of Technicolor.

The strong sense of using a traditional camera is heightened by a beautiful film-roll rewind animation, which appears fullscreen every time you decide to change the selected virtual film type.

Post-shot editing flexibility and availability

One of the conceptually strongest aspects of this new system is the non-destructive nature of the photographic process. Google has in fact designed the application’s architecture so that every captured image includes the entire processing package.

This means that the changes and applied emulations during framing never become final: even after saving the photo to the device’s main gallery, you maintain the total freedom to modify or even completely undo every single parameter and effect applied previously.

To complete the customization options there are several ways to vary the look of the shooting viewfinder, with a selection of themes named Editor, Dusk, Negative, Steel, Haze and Depth, ideal for tailoring the visual interface to your working habits. Snapseed version 3.15.0 is already available for download on the App Store and is completely free to download.

In the meantime, the development teams are actively working to bring these same innovations also to Android devices, with the aim of releasing an update that integrates the new visual editor already successfully tested on iPhone and iPad during the past year.
