Realme begins a wave of layoffs in India as the Oppo merger continues

The mobile phone sector is witnessing a significant strategic realignment within the galaxy of brands once controlled by BBK Electronics, the holding (now dissolved) that once dominated the mobile market.

The core news concerns the return of Realme under Oppo’s protective wing, a move that marks the end of an operational independence period lasting about eight years.

On the one hand this merger aims to optimize resources and reduce operating costs, while on the other it is producing immediate and tangible consequences on the workforce, with the launch of a significant wave of layoffs that has hit the Indian market first.

The rumors, confirmed by reports from specialized outlets such as 91mobiles, paint a complex picture for Realme’s employees in India.

The decision to consolidate operations has made numerous roles redundant, particularly those related to sales and the management of the sales network. Because the strategy envisions Oppo taking charge of the marketing and service networks, the need for Realme to maintain an autonomous and widespread workforce has diminished.

The testimonies collected directly from offline stores and internal staff indicate that layoffs are hitting across several regions, including Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. Area sales managers and staff have been told that their employment is coming to an end.

In many cases, according to local executives, employees have been asked to resign, with termination dates tentatively set for the end of April. This downsizing move affects not only entry-level positions but also appears to extend to managerial roles within the distribution chain.

Will there be changes for consumers?

The logic behind this merger is clearly driven by the desire to cut operating costs. By eliminating duplications in sales and service structures, the group aims for greater economic efficiency. However, while staff face a period of uncertainty, for the end user the transition could be less traumatic, if not advantageous.

The integration with Oppo indeed guarantees Realme smartphone owners access to a much broader and more structured service network, which the smaller brand could not sustain on its own.

Moreover, the convergence could lead to an improvement in software support, benefiting from shared development resources. The question remains how the brand’s identity will be managed in the long term, but for now service continuity seems assured.

A return to the origins

This operation represents a true return to the past. Realme was born in 2018 precisely as a branch of Oppo; its first device, the Realme 1, bore the parent brand’s logo on the back and the inscription “Designed by Oppo”.

A few months later, in September of the same year, the company split off, launching Realme 2 as an independent brand and building over the following years a distinct reputation of its own, while continuing to share part of the research and development with the now-ex BBK group.

Today, that period of autonomy ends. Realme returns to being a sub-brand, a move that reflects the need for large tech conglomerates to consolidate their positions in an increasingly competitive and saturated global market.
