The London-based company Nothing has decided to break the mold with an exercise in style as bold as it is costly. It all started from a provocation, or rather, from a direct request by the famous American streamer IShowSpeed.
In response to the content creator, known for his exuberance and chaotic live streams, the team led by Carl Pei has developed, albeit only in the conceptual phase and 3D prototyping, what could be defined as the ultimate smartphone for the “creator economy”.
The result is a device that defies the laws of the market and engineering, with development costs that would pale any financial department.
The concept behind this device is not simply that of a foldable phone, but a true mobile production hub.
The “trifold” design imagined by Nothing foresees the use of three distinct screens. This architecture is not a cosmetic fad, but responds to a precise ergonomic need of professional streamers: the need to manage simultaneously the video feed, the chat on platforms like Twitch or YouTube and the game or content in execution.
The most revolutionary aspect, however, lies in the device’s modularity. The designers have surpassed the limits of past attempts, such as Google’s Project Ara, proposing a completely removable third screen.
This detachable module can operate autonomously or transform into a high-quality camera for streaming, supported by a rear magnetic ring capable of hosting additional photographic lenses.
It is an approach that turns the smartphone from a simple communication tool into a multimedia production hub.
For a streamer who wants to broadcast from every corner of the globe, network stability is vital as the battery. Usually, TV networks and high-level creators employ heavy backpacks to aggregate several data connections.
Compressing this technology into a thickness of a few millimeters is physically impossible. Nothing has circumvented the obstacle with an elegant external solution: a proprietary USB-C dongle with USB 4 support.
This small accessory, with a negligible cost of about €1.90, delegates the heavy work of encoding and signal management to external hardware, keeping the phone slim but guaranteeing professional transmission performance.
Considering the unpredictable and often destructive nature of IShowSpeed’s live streams, the structural durability has become the project’s cornerstone.
Normal foldable smartphones are delicate objects, but the Nothing team had to rethink materials from scratch to create an extremely rugged device.
For the non-folding screen, sapphire crystal was chosen, known for its extreme hardness, while the chassis was reinforced at the TPe corners (thermoplastic elastomer), a polymer with high impact absorption commonly used in military protections.
Engineering went further, addressing even the risk of fire. Carbon fiber and fiberglass were discarded; the final choice for the hull fell on Kevlar embedded in a heat-resistant epoxy resin.
The result is a phone designed not only to fall but to survive extreme conditions, as if it were tactical gear lent to consumer technology.

If you look at the bare bill of materials, summing high-end components such as two processors Snapdragon 8 Elite, three batteries and complex titanium hinges, the unit production cost would be around €1,745. A high figure, but not far from today’s top-of-the-line.
However, the real obstacle is the necessary investment to make this technology real. Nothing has estimated that the development of the trifold platform would require an R&D budget of about €47.4 million (50 million dollars), to which another €4.7 million would be added to engineer the modular camera system.
The total would well exceed €52 million in R&D costs alone, making the project economically unsustainable for mass production.
