Motorola Signature will be the first of its kind, goodbye to the ‘Edge Ultra’?

An unexpected strategic shift could mark the end of the Edge Ultra nomenclature; here’s what we know about the mysterious Urus project from Motorola and the American brand’s premium future.

The world of mobile technology is used to predictable cycles and established nomenclatures, but Motorola seems ready to shake things up in 2025. Earlier this month, the first renders of what everyone believed to be the next Motorola Edge 70 Ultra surfaced online.

However, appearances can be deceiving. According to new rumors spread by the well-known and reliable tipster Evan Blass, the device in question will not belong to the Edge family.

The flagship, internally known under the codename “Urus“, is instead set to inaugurate a new era for the company: the Motorola Signature line. This move suggests the brand’s intention to position itself in a more exclusive and ‘premium’ market segment, distancing itself from past conventions.

A design that makes a statement

Evan Blass recently shared a new series of images that offer the clearest and most detailed look yet at what appears to be the final sale design of Motorola Signature’s first smartphone. The leaked colorways, named Carbon and Martini Olive, suggest a sober yet sophisticated styling choice, aimed at an audience seeking elegance beyond pure power.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the device presents a decidedly slim profile, while still maintaining a solid and imposing look. The front panel, revealed for the first time in these latest leaks, shows a display with curved edges, a hallmark of high-end flagships that Motorola continues to favor, interrupted only by a small central punch-hole for the selfie camera.

However, it is on the back that the design reveals its true identity. The rear aesthetics are dominated by a large square island placed in the top-left corner. This module houses a triple-camera setup accompanied by an LED flash, suggesting that imaging capabilities will be important in this new device.

Plenty of power and (perhaps) a few surprises

The rumors aren’t limited to aesthetics. Other recent leaks have begun compiling the device’s spec sheet. The first benchmarks suggest an interesting processor choice: the Motorola Signature could be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

Sources indicate that Motorola may have opted for this version rather than Qualcomm’s Elite variant (currently at the top of raw performance), and paired it with a healthy 16GB of RAM. A choice that, if confirmed, could balance energy efficiency and high-level performance. To complete the hardware picture, there is talk of an OLED display with 1.5K resolution, in line with current high-end standards.

Quality photography?

The name “Signature” implies an author’s signature, and it seems Motorola wants to put its mark on the camera system. Looking closely at the camera hardware in the leaked renders, relevant technical details emerge:

  • Sony LYTIA sensor: The adoption of these new sensors promises a leap in image quality in light handling and dynamic range.
  • Periscope telephoto: The optical system will cover a focal range from 12 to 71mm, ensuring versatility in zoom.
  • Video capabilities: In addition to optical image stabilization (OIS), the confirmed support for Dolby Vision suggests this smartphone will be a powerful machine for creating cinematic video content.

When will it arrive?

The question everyone now has concerns timings. Motorola did not launch an ‘Ultra’ model this year, a strategic pause that now seems sensible: the company was probably laying the groundwork for the debut of the Signature line.

Since it’s now well into December, it’s unlikely we’ll see the device before the end of the year. The most credible hypotheses now point to the first half of next year, when the first Motorola Signature could make its official debut, perhaps even during the CES in Las Vegas.
