Huawei Mate 80 Series: Technical specifications, price, and release

The Chinese tech giant has returned with its flagship series and, as tradition, there is also the luxury variant. Huawei Mate 80 comes in four with the Pro, Pro Max and RS models: in our in-depth look you will find all the details on design, technical specifications, price and release, for now only in China (but it’s not certain they’ll arrive in Italy, given the past).

Huawei Mate 80, 80 Pro, 80 Pro Max and 80 RS Ultimate Design: everything you need to know about technical specifications, price and release

As anticipated at the opening, the new lineup includes four models: Huawei Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro Max and Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design. The phones combine extreme performance and top-tier cameras, introducing features that redefine the flagship segment, particularly the incredible brightness of the display and the memory.

The Mate 80 series introduces a significant change in Huawei’s design strategy: the adoption of a flat 2.5D display for all four models, marking a shift away from curved screens. The overall look features a flat bezel and rounded corners.

The standout detail is the screen brightness, which reaches up to 8,000 nits, the highest peak ever seen on a smartphone. The standard and Pro models feature 6.75-inch displays, while the Pro Max and RS Ultimate Design rise to 6.9 inches, all based on OLED technology.

Fluidity is guaranteed by the adaptive refresh rate LTPO from 1 to 120 Hz. Aesthetically, the phones retain the iconic circular camera ring, with an additional polish, paired with a second circle on the back that identifies the charging coil, uniting the shapes to form the number “8”.

The chassis is robust and IP68/IP69-rated against water and dust. For security and selfies, the front includes a traditional sensor and a ToF camera for 3D facial recognition.

Under the hood, the Mate 80 series is powered by the Kirin 9030 and 9030 Pro chipsets, although the base version uses the Kirin 9020. Huawei’s disclosed statistics show a substantial performance leap: Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro Max with 16 GB of RAM boast a 42% improvement over Mate 70 Pro+ (with Kirin 9020), while Mate 80 Pro with 12 GB improves by 35% over Mate 70 Pro.

The most significant aspect of the specs is the memory: the flagship model, the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design, is equipped with up to 20 GB of RAM, the highest RAM capacity ever offered by the company in its Mate or P series.

The software is based on HarmonyOS 6, which integrates new features and a range of AI-powered capabilities.

Battery

In terms of autonomy, the Pro Max and RS Ultimate Design use 6,000 mAh batteries, while Mate 80 and 80 Pro offer 5,750 mAh units. Charging is exceptionally fast, as expected: 100W wired and 80W wireless, plus 20W reverse wireless charging.

Camera

The Mate 80 series cements Huawei’s photographic excellence. All models offer a physical diaphragm aperture that gives the user greater control over image capture. As usual, post-shot processing is handled by the XMAGE imaging system.

The Mate 80 standard comes with a 50 MP main camera, a 40 MP ultrawide and a 12 MP periscope telephoto. The package is complemented by the classic multispectral Red Maple Color Camera sensor, which accurately identifies color information and ensures, in combination with the main camera, faithful and realistic colors.

The Mate 80 Pro stands out with a 50 MP main camera featuring a 1/1.28″ sensor, a 40 MP ultrawide and a dual-periscope telephoto that offers macro and 4x and 8x zoom. The Pro Max and RS Ultimate Design elevate the level by including a 50 MP macro telephoto and a 50 MP super telephoto, with an optical zoom ranging between 6.2x and 12.4x.
