An attempted unlock withFace ID failed can be enough to crash the iPhone 18 Pro. Several users report that the phone stops responding and restarts by itself, and the issue also affects the flagship iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max Bug
When the Face ID authentication does not succeed, the screen stops responding to touch and, after a few seconds, the phone performs a forced restart. In various tests, the problem appeared simply by covering the face with the hand during authentication to open the Password app.
In the iPhone Analytics section under Settings, the related system error reports then appear. Anyway, the bug does not seem to have affected all users, although from the reports gathered it appears to be fairly widespread. Some, convinced they were dealing with a hardware defect, have even had Apple replace the phone.
What Apple Said
Apple confirmed to the 9to5Mac team that a software update is in the works to fix the issue and should be available at the beginning of next week. The Cupertino-based company did not specify the version number or the cause of the bug.
The Face ID of the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max has been redesigned: the infrared camera is now located under the screen, near the clock in the status bar. This makes the visible part of the Dynamic Island 25% smaller.
However, this is not a hardware issue, perhaps related to the new configuration, but a software defect (fortunately).
