Xiaomi 18 Pro, the rear screen now creates tailor-made apps with AI

The Chinese company officially confirmed one of the most anticipated innovations of the Xiaomi 18 Pro series: a variable rear screen, described as a significant evolution compared to the back panel of the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max. The main feature is the ability to display vivid colors with a dynamic light effect, as teased in a teaser video released by the company.

The real innovation compared to the previous panel isn’t just about the dynamic look and colors: users will no longer have to choose among predefined widgets, but will be able to generate small customized applications via artificial intelligence for specific needs, then pin them to the rear screen according to the moment’s requirements.

Among the examples shown in the official Xiaomi video are a timer for cooking eggs, a reminder to drink water, a Pomodoro-style timer, an English vocabulary tool, and a card with cooking tips.

“The needs of the rear screen can vary,” said Lu Weibing (president of the mobile division), adding that Xiaomi aims for “more advanced solutions to expand what users can do” with this space on the device.

Notifications and customized wallpapers

In addition to the new AI-generated mini-apps, the Xiaomi 18 Pro’s variable rear screen will continue to support app notifications and wallpaper customization. To give an idea of how much this space is already appreciated by users, Xiaomi shared MiShare Back Screen numbers on the Xiaomi 17 Pro: over 4 million daily interactions with app cards and more than 3.5 million new wallpapers added every day.

Numbers which, according to the company, motivated the investment in an even more evolved version for the 18 Pro series.

Launch window

The Lei Jun-led company confirmed the launch of the Xiaomi 18 Pro series during September (in China). It is important to note the details of the official teasers, all referring to the Pro series: almost certainly the standard model will not be present at the event and will make its appearance at a later time.

Probably this is an attempt to imitate Cupertino: Apple has postponed the launch of its base flagship to 2027, so it’s likely that Xiaomi and other Chinese manufacturers (still keeping an eye on the US brand) will follow suit.
