Apple has decided to further extend the free access to its satellite features for a full additional year.
The news, which emerged almost quietly through a marginal note in the press release dedicated to the launch of the new iPhone 18 Pro, confirms Apple’s clear intention to further delay the introduction of any costs for these security tools.
Users who already own a compatible device will therefore be able to continue to benefit from the service at no cost, while the company continues to maintain the utmost secrecy on the commercial strategies regarding this delicate sector.
SOS Emergencies via Satellite, Apple extends the free trial
The satellite connection made its official debut with the iPhone 14 lineup, initially offering the Emergency SOS feature and the ability to share your location via the app Find My. At launch, the company had specified that access to these tools would be completely free for the first two years.
However, as deadlines approached, Apple has always chosen the path of extension. In November 2023, the company had extended the 12-month trial period for iPhone 14 owners, and then repeated the same operation the following year to include iPhone 15 users as well.
The latest directive provides that zero-cost access is extended by a further year not only for the iPhone 14 and 15, but also for current iPhone 16 owners. The essential condition, as stated by the official documentation, is that such devices have been activated in a country where satellite features are regularly supported by midnight on September 9.
This decision prevents the services from expiring for the earliest adopters in the final months of this year.
A continuously expanding package of features
Since its introduction, the offering related to communication beyond the normal boundaries of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage has significantly expanded. Today the package is no longer limited solely to critical rescue requests, but also includes satellite roadside assistance and sending standard messages, tools that Apple groups under one large family of services.
Alongside the extension granted to existing customers, the company guarantees, as usual, the free package to buyers of the new models. Those who decide to purchase the very latest iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the new iPhone Duo will have a year of use at no cost, confirming the practice of offering the service as an important added value to buying the new hardware.
The usefulness of these tools becomes clear especially when people find themselves in remote zones or face unforeseen situations where any other means of communication proves totally ineffective.
Uncertainty about final prices
Years after the first big announcement, Apple has not yet communicated any official tariff structure, nor has it provided the slightest indication of how much a potential subscription could cost once the various promotional periods are exhausted.
As these are potentially life-saving technologies, many believe that imposing a fee for access to basic emergency services could trigger strong global controversy and be decidedly unpopular for the brand image.
Some observers hypothesize that the company may eventually opt for an intermediate solution, perhaps choosing to keep essential emergency rescue functions free and asking for a financial fee only for ancillary services, such as sending non-urgent messages or standard roadside assistance requests.
For now, the only certainty is that the entire Apple satellite ecosystem will remain cost-free for another 12 months. It remains to be seen whether this will truly be the last extension granted or if, in 12 months, we will witness a further delay.
