Motorola and GrapheneOS, here’s what makes support possible

The long-standing exclusivity binding GrapheneOS to Google’s Pixel smartphones is coming to an end. During the MWC 2026, the announcement of the collaboration with Motorola has charted a new course for the privacy-focused operating system.

Recent confirmations indicate that 2027 will be the year in which devices from the iconic brand will finally be able to officially host this platform.

The milestone does not stem from a simple software adaptation, but from precise security-related advances, made possible also thanks to the essential contribution of Qualcomm in developing the new processor technology standards.

Up to now, the decision to support only Pixel devices was dictated by rigid hardware requirements. The development team behind the project indeed requires that smartphones have hardware defenses of the highest level and components capable of isolating critical threats.

Industry dynamics are rapidly changing, allowing other manufacturers to align with these stringent protection requirements. The partnership between the American company and the system’s developers demonstrates how close collaboration with chip manufacturers is bridging the initial technical gap.

Although it is not yet clear whether a dedicated smartphone will be produced or whether compatibility will simply be extended to models already listed, the path to the global launch in 2027 now seems completely paved.

New features introduced by Android 17

An essential element of this expansion is represented by the recently introduced features with Android 17. One of the most notable features concerns the management of PIN entry attempts and the password, which is regulated directly through an isolated and secure hardware element.

Instead of allowing unlimited unlock attempts, the new software version sets the maximum limit to 20 attempts.

Beyond this barrier, the system introduces a progressive delay after each repeated error, offering extremely robust protection against brute-force attacks.

GrapheneOS will only support devices that natively integrate this generation of defenses.

The foundations and additional layers of defense

Since the era of the Google Pixel 2, devices from the Mountain View brand have adopted these physical protections against tampering and attempt limitations, effectively forming the only ecosystem suitable to host such a restrictive firmware.

On these solid foundations, GrapheneOS builds additional layers of defense to harden user data. Among the numerous extra security measures are support for longer access keys, an optional authentication that combines fingerprint verification with a second-factor PIN, and a range of advanced mitigations against exploiting code vulnerabilities.

The system also adds USB connection blocks when the phone is locked and a highly customizable proprietary auto-restart feature.
