Mediatek Dimensity 9600: mind-blowing CPU performance and a GPU that will surpass rivals

The next generation of flagship Android smartphones and tablets will see, as usual, the leading technological expressions developed by Qualcomm and MediaTek.

On one hand, the first details about the future Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 are starting to emerge, while on the other hand recent rumors point the spotlight at the highly anticipated Dimensity 9600.

According to information spread by the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, the new processor of the Taiwanese company will be built using an advanced 2-nanometer manufacturing process. At the moment, however, there is no certainty about which foundry will handle the material production, leaving open the hypothesis between the TSMC’s N2P node and Samsung’s SF2 technology.

The real distinguishing element of the Dimensity 9600 lies in its deep internal reorganization. The chip is expected to adopt a CPU architecture composed exclusively of high-performance cores, distributed in a particular structure 2+3+3.

Preliminary data indicate remarkable results, with single-core performance capable of directly competing with Apple's famous A-series, without specifying whether the benchmark is the current A19 Pro or the upcoming A20.

In the realm of multi-core performance, the MediaTek chip seems even to have the numbers to surpass Cupertino's offerings.

Completing the technical picture are the technologies Compute Matrix Engine and Scalable Matrix Extension, whose capabilities will be doubled, while maintaining at the same time a cache memory configuration substantially unchanged.

The GPU will give the competition a run for its money

Focusing on graphical processing, the Dimensity 9600 promises to offer tangible advantages over other 2-nanometer chips arriving in the coming months. The GPU, which sources associate with the "Magin" family, has been designed to distinguish the direct competitors by providing native and advanced support for frame interpolation and for resolution upscaling.

These are essential features to ensure a smooth and well-defined experience, especially in gaming. In addition to these innovations there is a clear increase in ray-tracing performance and overall rendering efficiency, specs that will allow developers to manage complex three-dimensional environments with optimized energy consumption.

The launch window

The wait to field-test these engineering innovations won't be particularly long. Sources indicate the month of September as the designated period for the debut of the very first smartphones equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 9600.

This timing is highly strategic, as it exactly coincides with the window in which the arrival of the first wave of smartphones based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 architecture is expected. The competition between the two leading semiconductor manufacturers is therefore expected to be fierce from the very first weeks of availability.

Consumers and enthusiasts will directly benefit from this strong competitive pressure, bringing to shelves devices equipped with extreme performance boost and an unprecedented graphics department.
