Siri will become a real chatbot: Apple set to challenge Gemini and ChatGPT

Siri is the famous voice assistant developed by Apple, integrated from the start into the brand’s devices – such as iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch. However things will become increasingly interesting during 2026, culminating with the launch of iOS 27.

In the next version of Cupertino’s software, Siri will become a real chatbot in every sense and thus a true rival to Gemini and ChatGPT.

Currently, Siri is limited to predefined responses and is not very adept at maintaining the context of a long conversation. It is, in short, an old-school voice assistant while so-called artificial intelligence chatbots have already taken hold.

When comparing Apple’s assistant with Gemini or ChatGPT, the differences are clearly visible. Generative AI-based chatbots are able to create new content and understand context: they can write emails, summarize long documents, create software code, generate images and videos.

They also feature multimodal support: they can interact via text, voice and images, analyzing everything the user provides. They can plan programs and perform complex reasoning; they are deeply integrated into the parent company’s ecosystem (in the case of Gemini and Google).

This is all that Siri is not, but things will change already in 2026. In January, Apple and Google have struck a long-term strategic collaboration that caused a stir: the Cupertino assistant will integrate Gemini’s models, solving one of the brand’s biggest criticisms in its history.

The peak of this partnership will be reached — according to Bloomberg — with the launch of iOS 27, macOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Along with Apple’s latest major update will come the new version of Siri (internally known as Campos), which will be a real chatbot.

This will function as an autonomous app integrated into Cupertino’s devices; it will support natural language like ChatGPT and Gemini and can be summoned with the usual wake word or by pressing the side button.

Clearly, it will be the result of a customized model based on Google Gemini: it will be able to perform web searches, generate images and summaries, analyze documents, control device settings, and use users’ personal data for certain activities.

As noted above, the debut is expected with iOS 27; however the unveiling should take place at WWDC 2026, scheduled for the right month.
