While the mobile phone market seems to have settled on formats that are increasingly longer and narrower, Huawei could have in store a countertrend move that looks to the past to innovate.
After surprising fans with the Pura X, the foldable that last year challenged conventions thanks to its internal 16:10 display, the Shenzhen-based giant seems intent on doubling down on the bet.
This time, however, it’s not about using complex mechanisms or futuristic hinges, but about a return to the solidity of the traditional “candybar” format, revived with proportions we thought forgotten.
Huawei and 16:9 smartphones, a step back to move two steps forward
According to rumors spread by the well-known insider Digital Chat Station on the platform Weibo, Huawei’s R&D labs are working on a new non-folding device characterized by a display with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10.
nnnnFor those with a historical memory of the industry, these are the proportions that dominated the scene before the advent of borderless displays and frames pared down to the bone, when multimedia consumption dictated ergonomic design.
nnnnThe idea behind this project directly stems from the positive feedback obtained from the Pura X. Despite initial skepticism, users have shown that they appreciate a wider and shorter screen, ideal for productivity, reading, and, of course, watching videos without the annoying side black bars typical of today’s 20:9 or 21:9 panels.
nnnnHuawei seems convinced that there is a market slice, especially in China, ready to embrace a “monolithic” device that adopts that same visual philosophy, but in a more robust and affordable body than a foldable.

nnnnThe choice to reintroduce a 16:10 display on a traditional smartphone in 2026 is not lacking in boldness. The current formats have been adopted mainly to improve grip and accommodate vertical feeds from social networks and messaging apps.
nnnnHowever, a return to the widescreen would offer undeniable advantages for those who use the phone as a work tool or primary multimedia hub. Imagine being able to view documents, spreadsheets, or presentations with natural width, or enjoy streaming content by using the entire surface of the panel.
nnnnThe report indicates that the panel is already in development with suppliers, and that the company has very high sales expectations. So it wouldn’t be a niche experiment, but a product designed to generate significant volumes, riding the wave of the success of its foldable predecessor.
