When a few months ago we tested Reolink OMVI 3i WiFi, one of the things that convinced us the most was the idea behind the OMVI series: why choose between a camera with a very wide field of view and a motorized one that follows what happens, when we can have both in the same product? With the new OMVI 2i Ultra Reolink it starts from this concept again, but completely changes its approach on another fundamental aspect: installation.
And this, in my opinion, is a difference much more important than it might seem when simply reading the technical sheet, because choosing a security camera is fairly easy, but the problem often comes afterward, when you need to understand where to install it, how to deliver power, and whether it makes sense to bore walls or lay new wiring to monitor a point in the garden, a garage or a side entrance. OMVI 2i Ultra eliminates a large part of these concerns.

Design and materials
Esthetically it is practically impossible to confuse Reolink OMVI 2i Ultra with a standard security camera; the structure is developed vertically and the different components are immediately recognizable. At the top we find the fixed wide-angle camera (though still manually adjustable, with a fairly limited range of motion), while below sits the motorized Pan & Tilt module.
The result is certainly distinctive and not exactly minimalist, but in a product of this type I don’t necessarily consider that a defect; on the contrary, and I must tell you, personally I believe an outdoor camera should also be visible, and the more it is, the better it is. In short, besides recording what happens, it should somehow communicate that the area is under surveillance, and this one does it.
The dimensions are about 180 x 168 x 99 millimetri and the weight, including the mounting bracket, is just over a kilogram, so we’re not looking at a tiny camera to hide under a gutter, but it’s not overly bulky either. Build quality is solid and in line with what we’ve found on other Reolink products in recent months. The body is mainly plastic, as is common in this category, but the assembly and joints still convey a good feel. IP65 certification and the manufacturer states an operating range between -20 and +55 degrees, so it can stay outdoors all year round.
One of the most successful aspects, however, is precisely the solar panel. We are not required to mount it directly above the camera: Reolink includes a 3-meter cable, so we can place it separately, and in a position more convenient relative to the camera—a detail that might seem trivial, but isn’t. The best spot to view the driveway could be under a canopy, while the spot that receives the most sun could be a couple of meters further forward. Being free to separate the two elements makes installation much more flexible and, above all, allows better solar charging.
