Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is selling more than expected, to the point of putting pressure on the Korean company’s production capacity. But the most interesting data concerns who is buying the foldable: an increasing share of buyers is coming directly from the iPhone world, an audience Samsung has historically struggled to win over, especially among the younger segments.
According to market data from the Korean outlet Newsis, the percentage of iPhone users who switch to Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 would have doubled compared to the launch of the previous generation.
What stands out is especially the demographic profile of those who choose to switch: it would be largely adolescents and people aged 20 to 30, an audience that historically has always favored the Apple ecosystem and that Samsung had never managed to intercept so markedly.
Among the reasons for the Galaxy Z Fold 8‘s success would be the wider format of the display, which when opened resembles the proportions of a passport, combined with an ultra-thin and ultra-light design while maintaining a screen large enough to be comfortable for watching videos.
A combination that seems to have resonated especially with those seeking a device different from the classic clamshell smartphone, without sacrificing portability.
To facilitate exactly this type of transition, Google and Samsung have jointly developed an updated version of Smart Switch, the tool designed to transfer data from an iPhone to a Samsung device.
The new version allows moving in blocks the call log, eSIM, messages, passwords and passkeys, all without the need to connect the two phones with a cable.
On the price front, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899 for the 256 GB variant in the United States (€2,099 in Italy). The comparison becomes interesting in light of the launch of the anticipated iPhone Ultra, scheduled for September 9: according to estimates, the new top-of-the-line Apple with the same storage option should cost between $2,100 and $2,300.
This represents a meaningful gap, which would give Samsung a non-negligible price advantage over the rival branded Cupertino.
