Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro isn’t out yet, but its telephoto lens is already generating discussion

The flagship smartphone line of Samsung is preparing to welcome a new member next year: the Galaxy S27 Pro.

This unannounced device, designed to slot between the Galaxy S27+ and Galaxy S27 Ultra, promises to complete the range by filling the current gap between the models.

However, recent rumors are raising not a few questions, particularly regarding the choices related to the telephoto lens, which could prove to be much less capable than initial expectations.

Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro, compromises on the telephoto lens?

Until recently, rumors suggested that the Pro variant would share much of the camera hardware with the bigger brother.

On one hand, the presence of a 200 MP main sensor and a 50 MP ultrawide camera seems confirmed, but recent reports from ETNews paint a completely different picture for the telephoto lens.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to feature a 50 MP camera with 5x optical zoom. By contrast, the Galaxy S27 Pro would settle for a more modest 12 MP sensor with 3x optical zoom.

This is a substantial scaling down compared with previous rumors, which also speculated for this model a 50 MP telephoto with 3x or 3.5x magnification.

This marked difference creates a clear performance gap between the two high-end devices, inevitably disappointing the expectations of users who hoped to achieve the highest photographic quality in a more compact and ergonomic form factor compared to the Ultra variant.

Production costs and the stagnation of the base models

The motivation behind this conservative decision seems closely tied to the current complex economic dynamics. Memory chip prices have risen significantly and, in an effort to keep the retail prices of the entire Galaxy S27 lineup stable, the South Korean company would be forced to make compromises on specific hardware components.

This strict cost-containment policy does not affect only the new Pro model, but extends its effects to the entire product line.

The starting versions, namely the Galaxy S27 and the Galaxy S27+, will indeed maintain the same camera configuration used in previous years: a 50 MP main sensor, a 12 MP ultrawide, and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

If these rumors are borne out by the facts at launch, it would certify the sixth consecutive year without meaningful updates to the photographic hardware of the standard and Plus models.
