Siri AI won’t be free forever, limits for heavy users of the assistant

Siri AI, the generative AI integrated into Apple devices, could soon require payment from more frequent users, marking a major shift in the software services offering model of the Cupertino-based multinational.

During a recent investor conference, Tim Cook indeed hinted at the financial sustainability of the advanced features, introducing the hypothesis of usage thresholds beyond which access will no longer be guaranteed without subscribing to a paid subscription.

Siri AI won’t be free forever

While the Siri base is presented as a benefit included with the purchase of compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac, the underlying technological reality entails significant management costs for the company.

Processing requests through LLM requires the ongoing use of proprietary cloud servers and third-party partners, generating a continual cost that drives management to consider forms of indirect or direct monetization.

Siri AI will require an iCloud plan?

Previously the company had set specific restrictions for certain advanced graphical features and for video analytics tools, tying higher usage volumes to the availability of higher-capacity iCloud storage plans, such as the 2 TB plan.

Although the Beta versions currently in circulation do not yet impose strict restrictions, the future direction seems clear. Those who exceed the standard interaction thresholds with the virtual assistant will almost certainly need to rely on an active iCloud+ subscription to continue to harness the system’s capabilities without slowdowns or temporary blocks.

This business strategy aims to balance the capital expenditure incurred by the company with a recurring revenue stream, redefining the boundary between core software features and value-added cloud services offered by the ecosystem.
