Google Introduces Tap to Share: Sharing Files on Pixel Becomes Instant

Google makes sharing content between Android devices even more immediate. The new feature "Tap to Share" starts from Pixel smartphones and allows transferring contacts, photos, videos and other items quickly by simply bringing two compatible devices close together.

This is a feature that closely mirrors Apple’s AirDrop, with instant information sharing, without going through complicated screens.

How the new Tap to Share works: Google improves Quick Share by taking cues from AirDrop

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL

The system leverages Quick Share and introduces a much more direct interaction: to exchange contact information, simply be on the Home screen and bring two compatible Android devices close for a moment. At that point a bidirectional exchange of information begins.

The procedure changes slightly when you want to send photos or videos. In this case you first need to open the phone’s share menu and then physically bring the two devices together. The transfer is then managed via Quick Share.

The rollout of the new feature began on August 12 on compatible Pixel devices: Google confirms support starting with Pixel 6 and newer models. The Mountain View giant has already announced that this feature will not remain exclusive to its own smartphones.

Will also arrive on Samsung’s new foldables

Among the upcoming compatible devices there will be Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, the new foldable lineup launched in July.

Google doesn’t specify a precise date, merely confirming that the feature will arrive soon on the three devices. Samsung won’t be the only brand to benefit from Tap to Share: the expansion will continue over the coming months and by the end of 2026 it will also arrive on other Android devices.

Quick Share becomes therefore even faster, eliminating several steps and allowing you to start the exchange simply by bringing two smartphones close to each other.
