Beyond electric: Xiaomi Auto announces Sky Nomad, the new EREV series

Xiaomi’s automotive division has announced a new product line focused on convenience and spacious interiors, called <strong Sky Nomad (or more precisely, Pengcheng). The range will be christened by the full-size N90 SUV, the first vehicle from Lei Jun’s company built with an EREV propulsion system.

Clearly the Chinese company has by no means given up on electric: the new vehicle is built with an extended-range system, i.e., characterized by a 100% electric drive but with a second engine (gasoline) that acts as an emergency generator.

In EREV cars the internal combustion engine is not connected to the wheels (the wheels are moved solely by the electric motor), but it serves to generate electricity when the battery is depleted.

In fact, for months there have been rumors of a mysterious EREV Xiaomi-branded vehicle (known by the codename Kunlun), already spotted on the road and captured in multiple shots. After the usual avalanche of rumors, the official confirmation finally arrived: the Xiaomi Sky Nomad series will be dedicated to extended-range vehicles, with a focus on comfort.

The first vehicle of the new Xiaomi Auto lineup is expected to debut as the N90, at least according to the latest rumors. The brand has limited itself to revealing the badge while details about the car are still the product of leaks. As noted at the outset, it seems to be a large electric SUV equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo range-extender system, i.e., a small internal-combustion engine with a turbocharger (for greater efficiency and power).

The vehicle would feature a battery pack above 70 kWh, sufficient for an electric range of 400/500 km and a combined range of over 1,500 km (also leveraging the auxiliary engine).

We are talking about a large SUV, 5.3 meters long with a 3.1-meter wheelbase, available in two interior configurations — 5 or 7 seats. Again, the vehicle has already been spotted on the road, but we are still dealing with leaked photos, and the design is concealed.
