A selfie video now lets you recover your Google account

Google has announced the introduction of a new option for the account recovery, based on recording a short selfie video.

This feature offers a secure and convenient alternative to traditional methods, such as passwords, trusted devices, or two-factor authentication apps, enabling users to regain control of their own profile in case of lost credentials or inability to access their usual devices.

The new selfie video-based recovery feature complements the existing options, enriching the possibilities available to users to regain access to their Google account. The setup simply requires using the camera of a smartphone or a computer.

Through a series of on-screen visual instructions, the user is guided to perform simple head movements, allowing the system to capture different angles of the face. This initial registration process creates a reference video that will be used for subsequent login attempts.

The verification mechanism is simple and intuitive. When the user needs to recover their account and decides to use the selfie video option, they will need to record a new short video, performing the required movements. The system will compare this new video with the reference one previously saved, verifying the match and granting access only if the result is positive.

Security and Privacy

Google has implemented several measures to ensure the security of the system and prevent fraud attempts. The head movements required during the video recording help confirm that the capture occurs in real time, countering the use of static photos or AI-generated deepfake videos.

In addition, Google’s standard security practices are applied to block suspicious access attempts.

Regarding privacy, the reference videos are encrypted and securely stored on Google’s cloud servers. This technical choice enables using the recovery option from any device, not limited to the device used for the initial recording.

Users have full control over their data: they can delete the reference video at any time through their account settings. By default, the video is used exclusively for recovery purposes, but the user can choose to share it for additional purposes.

Availability

The selfie video recovery feature, previously tested in Brazil, will gradually be made available to users globally.

It is important to note that this option is intended exclusively for personal Google accounts. Currently, it is not supported for Workspace business accounts, for minors’ accounts, or for users enrolled in Google’s Advanced Protection Program.
