Google Lets Slip a Hint About Pixel 11a

A recent beta version update of a proprietary Google app has prematurely revealed some crucial details about the company’s upcoming smartphones, confirming the existence of multiple devices not yet released.

Hidden in the code is a list of internal codenames pointing directly to the future Pixel 11 lineup.

Although the main attention is usually focused on high-end models, the most significant detail of this leak concerns a specific name that points to the budget variant of the lineup, suggesting that work on the Pixel 11a is already in an advanced stage, even before the official launch of its larger siblings.

Pixel 11a Appears in Google App Code

Companies often leave traces of their future devices in development within routine software updates, and this time the valuable clue comes directly from the Google Phone app.

Delving into the app’s version 230.0.946661649-publicbeta-pixel, a sequence of internal codename names for upcoming products was identified.

The discovered terms are Cubs, Grizzly, Kodiak, Yogi and Formosan. The first four names of the series correspond, according to information already emerged, to the main line of upcoming flagship smartphones: Pixel 11, the Pixel 11 Pro variant, the larger Pixel 11 Pro XL and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

However, it is exactly the last word on the list that has attracted the most attention.

The term Formosan had already circulated last May thanks to a report from Android Headlines, but since then it had partly gone unnoticed in the steady stream of rumors. The appearance of this specific identifier within an official company app now provides a more realistic piece of evidence.

By exclusion, one can easily infer that this codename refers to the Pixel 11a, the smartphone that presumably will occupy the mid-range of the market, bearing in mind that a simple internal designation does not unequivocally guarantee the release of a product, as corporate plans can change up to the last moment.

The company is clearly laying the groundwork to expand its hardware lineup with a new, more affordable device.

When is Pixel 11a coming?

Despite the excitement generated by this unexpected discovery, consumers will have to wait a long time before they can see the device on shelves. The current mid-range model, the Pixel 10a, debuted commercially in March 2026, confirming the company’s recent trend of favoring the spring season for the launch of the “a” series products.

Following this proven timetable, the unveiling of the Pixel 11a is likely to take place around March 2027.

Meanwhile, the Phone app does not provide further details regarding the technical specifications or features of the new devices. Google’s full attention is temporarily focused on the highly anticipated August 12 event, the date on which the main Pixel 11 models will be unveiled to the public.
