Earthquake in Venezuela, the Android alert system has confirmed its effectiveness

Data show the service’s reach: to date, the network has sent over 790 million notifications, ensuring life-saving coverage for about 2.5 billion people worldwide.

In countries like the United States, the system relies on official networks already in place such as ShakeAlert, but in countries like Venezuela, lacking a governmental early-warning infrastructure, the smartphone-based network becomes the only real line of defense for the population.

The competition in this field follows a distinctly different approach. Home devices Apple have advanced capabilities to forward and share emergency alerts between nearby devices, but strictly require that the alert originate from an institutional source.

In the absence of sensors that actively detect earthquakes autonomously, iPhones have no primary data to process in those regions lacking state seismic monitoring systems.

However, the Venezuelan experience highlighted a critical issue more related to public information than to the technology itself.
