Pete Lau’s company seems to live between two opposing worlds: on one hand rumors of a possible crisis and on the other announcements about novelties for the budget segment and a myriad of rumors about the next flagship. The future OnePlus 16 promises high-end performance, many improvements but above all a display never seen before with borders so thin as to drop below the 1 mm threshold!
The current OnePlus 15 is a real champion when it comes to the screen-to-body ratio: thanks to LIPO technology, the device features ultra-thin bezels of just 1.15 mm on each side. Followed by Xiaomi 17 with 1.18 mm and Meizu 22 with 1.2 mm thickness.
Let’s talk about displays with an extraordinary look, that seem almost fused with the rest of the chassis. This premium and futuristic effect is set to be accentuated with the OnePlus 16: according to Digital Chat Station the flagship will adopt bezels under 1 mm thick, for an unprecedented final effect.
However, the insider tempered expectations regarding the refresh rate: initially there were talks of as much as 240 Hz, while it seems that the final value has settled at 185 Hz.
According to the leaker, the Chinese company would have tested solutions above 200 Hz, but at the moment it would not appear to be a practical choice, given the trade-offs in image quality. It’s worth noting that Sharp has been releasing 240 Hz devices for years (including the recent Aquos R11) and no particular problems have been observed.
Returning to the OnePlus 16’s specs, the insider again emphasizes the presence of a BOE 6.78″ 1.5K display, while the whole package would be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
The uncertainty surrounding the debut remains: the current flagship has made an appearance in China at the end of October, but for the new top-of-the-line there are rumors of an early launch perhaps as early as September.
