The dream of a truly modular and professional mobile photography seems to have hit a snag at Xiaomi. In recent months, rumors had fueled high expectations for a revolutionary ecosystem of magnetic accessories for the upcoming flagships, but now there is a sudden change of course.
What was supposed to be the distinctive feature of the Xiaomi 18 series and of the futureXiaomi 18 and of the future Xiaomi 17 Fold/ MIX Fold 5 appears to have been suspended indefinitely, and it’s unclear why.
According to the well-known insider Digital Chat Station, the ambitious project dedicated to magnetic camera lenses would have been halted despite originally being scheduled for release this year.
Xiaomi was testing a technology based on native magnetic connectors integrated directly into the device’s chassis, a solution designed to offer near-zero latency and a much more stable power delivery than standard wireless magnetic systems.
The ecosystem wasn’t limited to the optics alone, but included prototypes of magnetic cooling fans and even modules for secondary displays, all designed to enhance the smartphone’s user experience.
However, based on what has emerged, the removable lenses and the tele converters would not have passed the quality tests required for mass production. The reasons for the lack of approval would be tied to the difficulty of guaranteeing structural reliability, durability over time, and, above all, image quality up to the premium standards Xiaomi has set for its top-tier devices.
Although the idea of an expandable photographic system was extremely fascinating, the company seems to have preferred prudence, avoiding bringing to market a product that could have shown quality limitations.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see whether these technologies will be revisited in the future or whether Xiaomi will decide to focus its resources on other innovations.
