The Korean brand announced its first tri-fold smartphone, but at the moment it’s already out of production. It was an experimental device, a tech exercise that can be considered successful. And now we await the new Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2, an improved version that could offer several steps forward compared to its predecessor. Primarily, the support for the S Pen, one of the most criticized shortcomings by users.
The debut of the next TriFold is expected in 2027, and rumors say it will boast a thinner and lighter structure. A patent leaked last month even shows a possible wide variant, characterized by a chunkier look but which proves more manageable and practical to use whether closed or open.
Meanwhile a new patent has surfaced, also dedicated to a tri-fold. There is a possibility that it could be the future Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2, not only for the design but also for the major novelty it could introduce.
First of all, the patent confirms support for the S Pen: therefore the device should introduce the digitizer, allowing the user to use a stylus. The other novelty concerns the housing of the S Pen, which should be positioned inside one of the two hinges (likely with magnetic latches to keep it in place).
This strategy clearly resolves the space problem, finding an ideal placement for the accessory. However, it is a design-impacting choice since one of the three portions of the panel would be shorter (as also seen in the image above).
That said, a patent does not automatically equal a device that will actually be produced. Many of these ideas never see the light of day, remaining relegated to the pages of a document. Perhaps the next Galaxy Z TriFold 2 will solve the shortcoming of the first chapter by introducing the S Pen: it remains to be seen whether it will be a separate accessory or truly integrated into the chassis (in a way similar to what already happens with the Galaxy S Ultra).
