Oura Ring 5 is thinner and lighter but still costs a fortune

The Finnish-American company Oura has recently unveiled the fifth generation of its famous smart ring.

Having arrived on the market just a year and a half after the previous model, the device presents itself with extremely compact dimensions, aiming to attract that segment of the audience that has been deterred so far by the bulky shapes of traditional wearables.

Despite the notable improvements, the entry price remains high, confirming the brand’s exclusivity in an increasingly crowded sector.

Oura Ring 5 is official: all the updates

The true novelty of this iteration lies in material engineering and component miniaturization. With a thickness of just 2.28 mm and a width of 6.09 mm, the device is 40% smaller than the fourth generation.

The titanium enclosure is protected by a new vapor-deposition coating designed to increase the object’s scratch resistance. Additionally, the structure guarantees waterproofing up to 100 m depth, certified by the IP68 rating.

From a hardware architecture perspective, the sensors have been redesigned and placed closer to the skin, accompanied by LEDs four times more powerful to capture biometric signals through twelve independent channels.

Battery life also increases, with an estimated duration between 6 and 9 days per charge. This system is supported by a new portable charging case, sold separately, capable of providing up to an additional month of energy and equipped with a button to check the charging status.

Advanced monitoring and active prevention

On the software front, the company puts a strong emphasis on preventive medicine, introducing sophisticated tools for body analysis. The newly named feature Health Radar works continuously in the background to detect blood pressure signals and nocturnal breathing anomalies, providing long-term measurements that can indicate a potential cardiovascular fatigue that would otherwise be invisible during the day.

The tracking of physical activity makes a leap forward thanks to the introduction of a live mode that allows you to view heart rate, pace and distance directly on the smartphone screen during workouts, without having to unlock the phone.

Automatic detection for low-impact sports, such as Pilates, has also been significantly improved. The digital ecosystem further expands by integrating support for GLP-1 weight loss drugs, allowing users to monitor dosages, side effects and body changes directly from the main application.

The innovation carries a precise price tag, remaining undeniably high. The new Oura Ring 5 starts at €399 for the base silver and black finishes, rising to €499 for premium colors like the new gold, deep pink, and brushed silver.

These figures must be complemented by the monthly subscription cost, which stands at €5.99 or €70 per year, an essential prerequisite to unlock in-depth analysis of your vital metrics.

The market entry, with shipments starting on June 4, comes at a pivotal financial moment for the company founded in Oulu in 2013. With an estimated valuation of $11 billion, 5 million paying users, and revenues that have topped the one-billion-dollar mark, Oura is indeed preparing for an imminent initial public offering (IPO).
