OPPO is ready to copy (and improve) one of Apple’s biggest innovations

The mobile communications sector lives on cycles of innovation that often see leading manufacturers converge toward technically similar solutions, in an attempt to offer the most immediate and qualitatively superior user experience.

Recently, attention has focused on a component often neglected but fundamental: the front camera.

Although Apple has introduced a truly important novelty in the iPhone 17 lineup, the latest rumors suggest that OPPO intends not only to follow this path, but to surpass the competition through decidedly more ambitious specifications.

The idea behind this novelty lies in adopting a sensor with an aspect ratio of 1:1, i.e., perfectly square.

Traditionally, smartphone camera sensors follow rectangular formats (4:3) that force the user to physically rotate the device to switch from a vertical shot to a horizontal one.

The integration of a square sensing surface instead allows the software to capture a much wider image, from which it is possible to extract crops in 16:9 or 4:3 formats without any loss of field of view and, above all, without having to change the orientation of the smartphone.

This solution drastically simplifies content creation for different social platforms, ensuring the same quality for both horizontal videos and the vertical formats typical of stories or short clips.

Technical superiority in numbers

While Apple has adopted a square 18 MP sensor for the latest generation of iPhone, OPPO seems ready to push back with a much denser configuration. The most recent rumors from production circles speak of a module in testing that reaches 100 MP.

Such a high resolution on a front sensor is a necessity to support digital zoom and software cropping without sacrificing detail. With 100 MP available, OPPO could offer superior sharpness even after performing the crops needed to obtain the desired format, overcoming the physical limits of a sensor with lower pixel density.

When is the official debut?

The Chinese manufacturer is no stranger to this kind of operation, having often used its flagship series to showcase engineering capabilities achieved. Current clues suggest that this new technology could find space on board the series Find X10, whose debut is expected in October.

If these timelines are confirmed, OPPO would be in a favorable position, offering a practical function that resolves a small but constant friction in everyday camera use.

The challenge therefore shifts to software optimization and the ability to handle such a massive amount of data for each single front shot, an area where the company has invested heavily in recent years.
