Dimensity 9600 faces Apple: the new MediaTek chip aims to surpass Apple in multi-core

The September will see the return of the usual generation-to-generation challenge, with the launch of the new flagship chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek. The latest news about the future Dimensity 9600 comes from the usual Digital Chat Station and bodes well for the first OPPO and vivo flagship devices that will adopt this solution. The insider adds a few more details to the picture: the new SoC could even surpass Apple’s chips, in some operations.

Dimensity 9600 aiming for 5 GHz to surpass Apple: the latest rumors on MediaTek’s future flagship chipset

Based on what has emerged so far, the Dimensity 9600 will be built on a 2 nm process with an All-Big-Core architecture (therefore only high-performance cores) and an octa-core layout 2 + 3 + 3. The Chinese leaker claims that single-core performance will be similar to Apple’s chipsets while in multi-core the surpass would occur.

However, the Cupertino processor is not specified: it is not clear whether this is a hint related to the performance of the future Apple A20 Pro or if the comparison concerns the current A19 Pro.

So far there has been talk of a maximum clock frequency close to 5 GHz, compared to 4.21 GHz of the current Dimensity 9500. According to the leaker, the new processor will bring a sharp jump in performance (CME/SME), potentially doubling them versus the previous generation, while changes to the cache memory should be contained.

As for graphics, the Dimensity 9600 would be equipped with a new-generation Magin GPU larger than rival 2 nm chips. It should also support integrated technologies to increase smoothness (frame interpolation) and image resolution, as well as improve ray tracing and overall rendering efficiency.

Launch window and the first smartphones

The unveiling of the new MediaTek SoC is expected for September, while from the same month the first smartphones should begin to appear, in China. Official confirmations on timing are still pending, but—as tradition dictates—the lead would belong to OPPO and vivo.

The OPPO Find X10 series is expected with various improvements to the photographic module and the addition of a Pro Max model. The same applies to the vivo X500 lineup, but in this case the Pro Max variant has been unofficially confirmed thanks to a certification.
