The iPhone camera app is about to receive a major update

Ahead of the annual developers’ conference WWDC, which will open its doors on June 8, 2026, the upcoming features that Apple has in store for the next update to its mobile operating system are starting to take shape.

According to the latest information shared by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the update to iOS 27 will bring with it a major overhaul focused on overall performance and artificial intelligence.

However, the real news for professionals and casual photography enthusiasts lies in a profound transformation of the native Camera app.

Until now, iPhone owners have had to cope with a predefined and fairly rigid shooting interface. With the arrival of the new OS version, this rigidity will give way to a remarkable flexibility. While the base settings will preserve the Cupertino aesthetic, users will have access to a new panel for adding widgets.

Through this tool, it will be possible to replace and rearrange the individual controls on the screen: you can decide to keep always in evidence the controls for resolution, for flash management or for activating the Live Photos mode, effectively building a working environment tailored to your habits.

To facilitate one-handed use, the main switch that expands all the controls will no longer be confined to the top-right corner, but will be placed in a much more ergonomic location next to the shutter button.

Touch-ready technical tools

The California-based company has decided to introduce more complex technical options to guarantee full control over the final image. The smartphone’s screen will allow managing parameters such as depth of field, exposure levels and the various photographic styles.

Although the recent physical inclusion of the Camera Control already provides a hardware input system, rumors suggest that interaction via the touch panel will be optimized to be even more immediate.

To support framing, new composition grids and an updated level will also be implemented, designed to help photographers achieve perfectly composed shots from the very first moment.

Visual intelligence merges with the camera

AI-powered innovations will not be confined to separate areas of the smartphone, but will be integrated directly into the shooting tool. Apple plans to introduce a specific mode for the voice assistant inside the photographic interface.

This will allow users to leverage visual intelligence without having to go through secondary menus, instantly enabling features such as image search or real-time text translation simply by framing them.

Beyond scene analysis, the new neural networks will also influence the post-production phase, providing new tools for photo editing.

Siri and system evolution

Away from the camera, the Siri assistant is set to receive very evident structural changes. Visually, the light animation that signals its activation will move from the device’s edges to integrate more coherently inside the Dynamic Island.

The classic Spotlight search function will be replaced by a new interactive screen: typing or speaking will yield results organized as convenient visual cards, enriched with information drawn from the web.

This interface will also serve as a gateway to start direct textual conversations with the AI, whose full histories will be accessible in a new standalone app dedicated exclusively to Siri.

The autumn update will also include refinements in other key areas. The Safari browser will feature a redesigned home page to facilitate navigation, the Weather app will display more atmospheric data and the Image Playground tool will benefit from a simplified graphical interface.
