New details emerge about Pixel Glow, is the notification LED making its comeback?

About a decade ago, the small notification LEDs represented one of the most appreciated features by Android users. With time and the rapid evolution of smartphone design, increasingly oriented toward ultra-thin bezels and large screens, this feature has gradually disappeared from devices.

Despite various attempts by manufacturers to replicate the effect using the camera flash, rings of light around the lenses, or even dedicated secondary displays, the traditional light indicator has never truly managed to reestablish itself in the main market segments.

However, the situation could undergo an interesting change with the upcoming generations of upcoming generations of Google devices. The Mountain View company appears to be working on a special lighting feature named Pixel Glow, designed to work in perfect synergy with the Gemini AI.

Google Pixel 11, is the notification LED back?

Hints about Pixel Glow have been circulating for some time now, but recent discoveries inside Android’s source code have provided much more concrete details.

Analyzing the Pixel Diagnostics app, an official tool developed for troubleshooting phones, have emerged specific text strings that explicitly reference a color visual indicator.

The software includes precise instructions to test a hardware component capable of emitting red, green, and blue light in sequence.

A particularly telling detail is the explicit request to flip the device to observe the light’s behavior during the test.

Additionally, the code mentions a bulb-shaped icon, which presumably is used to start the diagnostic procedure and to ascertain any anomalies in the emission of the individual colors. It remains to understand whether this source will be limited to these three base colors or if it will be able to reproduce the entire color spectrum.

The integration with artificial intelligence

The physical component does not appear to be a purely aesthetic addition, but seems deeply tied to Google’s software ecosystem. Alongside the discoveries in the diagnostic app, further confirmations come from the code of Google’s main app.

Here, fascinating nomenclatures have been identified, such as PixelLights, Gemini Glow and Aurora. These terms appear strategically alongside Robin, the internal name notoriously associated with the Gemini assistant, confirming the hypothesis that the lighting system will interact directly with Gemini’s operations.

It is noteworthy that the term Aurora was used in earlier versions of the diagnostic app to refer to this very hardware, before being removed recently.

The currently available information does not clearly decisively clarify the exact placement of this new light source on future smartphones. The instruction to flip the smartphone for the test strongly suggests the system is positioned on the rear shell.

The most credible hypotheses indicate that the system could surround the camera island, an iconic and distinctive design element for the series, creating an elegant luminous profile.

Another speculation imagines integrating the diodes directly under the large logo shaped like a “G” present on the back of the devices.

At the moment, timings for a potential market debut remain entirely undefined. There is still no absolute certainty that the company intends to bring this technology to end consumers, as it could be confined to internal trials.
