Farewell to Xiaomi 12: the curtain falls on the flagship that downsized displays

It’s a goodbye that hurts a little for the nostalgic: Xiaomi 12 was the device that showed there was still room for the small top of the range in a market dominated by giants. Starting from this month, the former flagship family enters the EOS (End of Support) list, bidding farewell to hopes for new software updates and security patches.

Xiaomi 12, 12 Pro e 12 Lite: end of support for the most iconic generation of the Chinese brand

Xiaomi 12

The Xiaomi 12 series has been fundamental to the Chinese company’s journey, and the reason lies in a particular insight. Starting with the Mi 8, the brand’s flagship series began implementing ever larger displays, eventually reaching 6.81″ diagonal (with the Mi 11).

The following year, in 2022, the stroke of genius: returning to human-sized dimensions with Xiaomi 12 and a 6.28″ display. The flagship has returned to being manageable but alongside the Xiaomi 12 Pro, the ideal choice for those aiming for a larger panel (6.73″).

The 12 series marked the return to compact origins, a trend that has continued in later generations. All base Xiaomi models are now fixed at 6.3″ diagonals, while with Xiaomi 17 Pro Max we have witnessed the arrival of 6.9″.

Time has vindicated Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro: over the years all Chinese brands have expanded the compact offerings, consistently delivering one or more increasingly manageable flagships.

Starting from March, the former top-of-the-line devices have entered the EOS/EOL list, i.e., those models that have ended the life cycle. The Xiaomi 12 series will no longer receive software updates: the latest release is HyperOS 3 with Android 15.

Time’s up also for Xiaomi 12 Lite: however the device is stuck at Android 14 and HyperOS 1, so this is a formal end. To find out how many security updates your Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO will receive, you can take a look at our in-depth article (updated with all the latest news).
