Spotify gears up for the era of smart glasses, with an immersive interface

Samsung and Google are at work on launching their respective smart glasses: it will be a decisive step toward a future in which XR devices will be increasingly integrated into our daily lives. And in the meantime Spotify, the world’s most popular music streaming platform, is indeed laying the groundwork to officially land on augmented reality glasses.

The first rumors, revealed by the teardown of the code of a beta version of the Android app, suggest that the company is planning an interface simplified capable of projecting essential information without distracting the user from their daily activities.

This development, spotted thanks to the app teardown, not only confirms Spotify’s interest in the new form factors, but foreshadows a future in which controlling music will be completely hands-free and integrated into the surrounding environment.

Currently, the music app already interacts with devices like Ray-Ban Meta through voice commands and touch, but the new hints point to a leap in quality toward a more immersive dimension. Specifically, the beta code references Now Playing screens and the lyrics display of songs, allowing users to follow the words or simply view the tracks playing directly on the glasses’ lenses.

According to Google’s technical documentation for future glasses Android XR, the system will not run full applications autonomously; instead, the smartphone will serve as the main processing unit, projecting visual content to the glasses’ displays. This will allow wearable devices to remain lightweight and comfortable, while offering advanced functionality.

Strategically, Spotify seems to be getting ahead of rivals like YouTube Music or Amazon Music, which have not yet shown signs of such development toward the XR ecosystem. The introduction of quick controls and information visible at a glance could make everyday listening significantly smoother.

At the moment Google and Samsung are still under development, but there could be news by the end of the year: it is precisely in this light that Spotify’s move takes on even more significance, since the music streaming app does not seem intended to be caught unprepared.
