It seemed like a long-abandoned idea, a technological experiment tucked away in Mountain View’s drawers for almost a decade after the end of the famous Project Ara. And yet, the concept of a modular smartphone is back in the conversation thanks to Tecno.
The Chinese manufacturer is therefore preparing to present at the Mobile World Congress 2026 its new project, named “Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology concept“.
The aim is to give new life to the vision of a composable ecosystem, allowing enthusiasts to imagine again a device that adapts to daily needs in a dynamic and strictly physical way.
Modular smartphone, according to Tecno is the technology finally ready?
Unlike past prototypes, often bulky and rather ungainly, the device imagined by the Asian company puts a strong emphasis on elegance and portability.
The base phone stands out for an extremely slim profile, only 4.9 millimeters. Even applying an add-on, such as the 4.5-millimeter-thick external battery, the total footprint remains comparable to that of any current high-end device on the market.
The docking system distinctly departs from old mechanical solutions: there are no longer complex sliding connectors. The modules connect via a sophisticated ultra-thin magnetic architecture and communicate with the central unit using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connections and mmWave technology.
Thus it represents a structurally different approach from past ideas, aimed at adding advanced accessories in wireless mode rather than physically replacing primary hardware components of the motherboard.
Aesthetic customization and available modules
To guide the user in assembly, the back shell of the terminal is divided into eight specific magnetic zones that facilitate the placement of accessories.
From an purely aesthetic standpoint, Tecno offers two distinct variants. The first, called ATOM edition, features a sleek silver aluminum body accented with red highlights. The second, defined as MODA edition, embraces a visual style more inspired by the niche culture of technology enthusiasts, offering a decidedly more eccentric character.
Currently the system includes about ten different modules, designed to significantly expand the camera and communications capabilities.
We find an action cam dedicated to content creators, a telephoto lens that turns the phone screen into a true viewfinder, and even specific tools for communications in geographic areas with no network coverage.
The logic behind the project is simple but effective: carry only the hardware necessary to tackle the specific day, without having to settle for a rigid technical equipment defined at factory.
The wait for the Barcelona fair
As is often the case with experimental innovations showcased at industry fairs, there is still no official information regarding a possible commercial launch date or the public selling price.
The company itself describes the prototype as a long-term design exercise, a pure exploration of the future possibilities of mobile phone design.
It remains to be seen whether this ingenious technology will actually hit store shelves in the coming years or if it will remain a mere styling exercise. What is certain is that the interest around this modern interpretation of the modular phone is decidedly high.
The upcoming Barcelona event will provide the ideal opportunity to closely observe the prototype among the fair’s pavilions, test its build validity and understand whether this vision has the chops to become a product for everyday use.
