Sony has officially unveiled the new earbuds WF-1000XM6, confirming the rumors that had been circulating for weeks and bringing to market a product that focuses entirely on technical refinement.
The launch, which happened yesterday, marks a decisive step forward for the Japanese giant’s flagship line, introducing hardware specifications usually reserved for higher-end equipment, such as 32-bit audio processing.
However, this infusion of technology comes with a price that positions the earbuds in a decidedly exclusive tier.
The first tangible change compared to the previous generation concerns aesthetics and ergonomics. Sony has decided to abandon the bulkier lines of the past in favor of a sleeker profile: the WF-1000XM6 are indeed 11% thinner than the XM5.
This choice responds to the need to minimize interference with the ear and ensure a more comfortable fit even during extended listening sessions. The shape of the earbuds has also changed, shifting from a circular structure to a more oval, designed to sit better in the ear’s concha.
The charging case reflects this new stylistic direction, featuring sharper, and squared edges compared to the past’s softer curves.
Despite external changes, the IPX4 rating remains, guaranteeing resistance to splashes of water and sweat, making them suitable even for sports activity.
The integration with the Google ecosystem is deep, thanks to native support for Gemini Live, which enables fluent and natural voice interaction directly from the earbuds.
Regarding battery life, Sony has chosen a path of continuity: the battery guarantees 8 hours of playback on a single charge, reaching 24 total hours using the case. Charging is via USB-C or in wireless mode via the Qi standard.

The system is based on the new QN3e processor, which handles the internal DAC and amplification, working in tandem with the Integrated Processor V2.
This combination enables 32-bit audio processing, a feature that promises a fidelity of sound rarely seen in true wireless earbuds.
The engineering does not stop at software: the diaphragm has been redesigned using new materials for both the dome and the edges, aiming to deliver crisper highs and deeper bass without distortion.
The on-paper specifications are impressive, with full support for Hi-Res audio, DSEE Extreme for upscaling compressed files, and compatibility with 360 Reality Audio.
The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) section has undergone a substantial update, with a stated improvement of 25% over the previous model.
This result was achieved by increasing the number of microphones, moving from three to four per earbud, bringing the total to eight. The QN3e processor analyzes input data from these sensors to generate a cancellation signal able to more effectively handle even high-frequency sounds, traditionally harder to filter.
A particularly interesting detail concerns internal noise management. Sony redesigned the earbud vents to eliminate those annoying sound artifacts, such as footstep echoes or chewing sounds, which often affect in-ear devices due to occlusion of the ear canal.
Also the call quality benefits from the new hardware setup: the combined use of eight microphones, bone-conduction sensors, and AI-based noise reduction algorithms aims to isolate the user’s voice even in the most chaotic environments.
This technology comes with a decidedly high price. In Italy, the Sony WF-1000XM6 arrive on shelves at €299.00. A significant figure that requires a conscious investment from the user.
If on one hand the improvements in ANC, build quality and audio management justify the label of premium product, on the other hand the entry barrier could discourage those seeking a simple upgrade over the previous model.
Sony has created a device that does not want to compromise, clearly addressing those who demand the maximum from their mobile listening experience.
