The smartphone market is experiencing a period of intense price pressure, driven largely by a perfect storm in the memory sector. The surge in demand for AI chips in data centers has pushed manufacturers to redirect production toward high-margin components, reducing supply for consumer devices.
Many manufacturers have already admitted the impossibility of absorbing memory costs, whose prices have risen by up to 60%. Xiaomi, Redmi, Honor, OPPO and vivo have already raised prices in China and India, and now Samsung is also affected. The targets are the Galaxy A56, A36 and F17, for the moment only for the Indian market.
The new prices for the affected smartphones have been in effect since January 5 and—as also anticipated at the outset—so far they have hit only India. However, it is clear that things will evolve quickly in other countries as well, and there will be cascading price hikes.
After a promising start (thanks to leaks that raised hopes), things are changing also for the future Samsung Galaxy S26 series. One of the company’s executives has confirmed that a price increase for the next flagship models is not ruled out for the upcoming top-end devices, so it’s clear this will be the trend for 2026.
Turning to the mid-range of the A and F series, the Galaxy A56 has undergone an increase of 2,000 rupees (about 19€ at current exchange rate) for all storage variants; the Galaxy A36 has also seen price increases — 1,500 rupees, about 14€ — for all configurations. Finally, the small Galaxy F17 has seen an increase of 1,000 rupees (about 9€) for each variant.
The new prices apply to both the base 4 and 8 GB RAM models and the high-end versions up to 12 GB, with no discounts for anyone. At this point it is clear that to keep prices as low as possible, the various manufacturers will have to focus on lower configurations.
Regarding the flagship models, at the moment the Galaxy S25 series and the foldables Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 have not yet been affected. Still, it is only a matter of time now, and the same goes for all brands and in all markets.
