Apple Vision Pro’s Decline: Cupertino’s Future Depends on Smart Glasses

The start of 2026 brought with it an unexpected verdict for one of Cupertino’s most ambitious products in recent history: Apple Vision Pro is officially on the list of technologies at risk of extinction.

Despite the aura of innovation surrounding its launch, the augmented reality headset priced at $3,499 is facing an unprecedented production and commercial crisis.

Recent analyses indicate that Apple has drastically reduced production at its Chinese manufacturer Luxcorp, marking a moment of deep reflection not only for the company, but for the entire extended reality sector.

This slowdown suggests that the market is not yet ready for such expensive and bulky devices, pushing the tech giant to reconsider its strategy in favor of lighter and more affordable solutions.

Numbers tell a story of rapid decline: in the last quarter of 2025, Apple would have sold only 4,500 headsets worldwide, including the new updated version with the M5 chip – which did not manage to lift the situation.

To put it in perspective, it is less than one-tenth of the roughly 500,000 units distributed in the debut year, 2024. Consequently Apple has cut the device’s digital marketing budget by 95%.

In fact the problem is not limited to Cupertino, as the entire AR/VR segment suffered a 14% drop in sales in the first half of 2025, but Vision Pro’s position is made more fragile by its placement in the ultra premium segment.

The reasons for this failure are manifold and touch both economic and functional aspects. In a period when users are more careful with spending on essentials, a device costing nearly $3,500 struggles to find space, especially when compared with cheaper alternatives such as the Meta Quest 3S at $250 or Samsung’s Galaxy XR at $1,800.

However, the main obstacle remains the absence of an indispensable feature that justifies the purchase: if the iPhone is an essential status symbol and the Mac is the ultimate work tool, Vision Pro has not yet managed to define its specific role in daily life.

The Future Is in Smart Glasses

Facing these obstacles, Apple appears ready for a strategic pivot. The company would be shifting human and technological resources away from developing a cheaper version of Vision Pro toward a completely new project: a pair of light and affordable smart glasses.

The goal is to compete with Ray-Ban Meta AI, which have enjoyed notable success thanks to their ability to integrate useful features such as live translation and voice search into a classic and not overly flashy design. The evolution toward what could be called Vision Air would represent Apple’s real bet for the future, aiming for a design that can be worn all day without sacrificing aesthetics.

So, in short, the decline of Apple Vision Pro does not mark the end of Apple’s ambitions in augmented reality, but rather a necessary lesson. AR technology still has enormous potential, but the market seems to demand devices that integrate naturally into daily life, rather than heavy and bulky headsets with external batteries.
