Spotify Introduces AI Persona, the badge to recognize virtual artists

Spotify is preparing a new measure to make the presence of artificial intelligence more transparent. Starting from mid-September, some profiles will be identified with the new AI Persona badge, designed to clearly distinguish artificial identities from real artists.

The novelty falls under the Artist Identity & Trust program and is presented as yet another addition to the platform in the fight against the spread of AI content.

The new badge will be visible in several places across Spotify’s interface. It will appear on the artist profile banner, in the biography, in search results and also inside playlists, next to the track titles. Tapping or clicking on the label will also allow users to learn how the AI Persona status was attributed.

In some cases, the artist themselves will voluntarily declare their artificial nature, while in others Spotify will intervene after an internal profile review.

The goal is to prevent listeners from confusing artificially generated identities with real people and enable a more informed choice of the content to support.

AI Persona music will be excluded from recommendations

The most important change, however, concerns the music discovery system. By default, Spotify will exclude tracks published by AI Persona from editorial recommendations and from the algorithm.

These contents should therefore not appear spontaneously in personalized recommendations for users. The situation changes when the listener voluntarily decides to follow a profile labeled as AI Persona.

Spotify aims to maintain more space for real artists within its recommendation systems, without banning the publication of projects based on artificial identities.

Artists can self-declare and users will be able to report the AI Persona

The identification process will not depend solely on the checks carried out by Spotify. Artists can already voluntarily declare their own nature through Spotify for Artists.

At the same time, the platform will introduce a dedicated monitoring system for profiles whose public image appears clearly generated using AI tools.

Spotify plans to allow users to directly report profiles they believe to be AI Persona but that are not yet flagged. Reports can thus contribute to the process of identifying artificial identities on the platform.

Spotify distinguishes artificial identity and music created with AI

The AI Persona badge does not necessarily indicate that a track was produced using artificial intelligence. The new label concerns exclusively the public nature of the artist or profile. A real musician who uses AI tools during composition or production is therefore not automatically considered an AI Persona.

To indicate the role of artificial intelligence in the creative process, Spotify already offers different tools, including AI Credits and SongDNA, through which it is possible to specify how the technology was used in creating a track.

The platform offers a rich set of features, and with the new badge, Spotify also seeks to address one of the more recent issues surrounding the diffusion of AI: clearly distinguishing a real artist from a completely artificial personality.
