Samsung has announced its new line of foldable smartphones, the first models equipped with One UI 9 and Android 17. Among the software novelties, Galaxy Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra introduce the mode webcam: the phones can be used as high-resolution webcams for Windows and Mac computers.
This is an addition aimed at improving productivity, allowing to leverage the smartphone’s camera hardware during video calls and online meetings, without having to purchase a dedicated webcam.
The new Samsung foldables turn into webcams for PC and Mac
Samsung has made the procedure particularly simple and fully integrated into the operating system. To use one of the new Galaxy Z devices as a webcam, simply:
- connect the smartphone to the computer via a USB-C cable;
- wait for the USB settings to appear on the phone;
- select the Webcam option among the available modes.
The entire procedure is native and does not require installation of third-party apps, offering an immediate and stable experience. This is a feature that debuts for the first time in the brand’s foldable lineup: the previous Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 do not feature the webcam mode (but it is not ruled out that it will be implemented at a later date).
The foldable design is an advantage
One of the most interesting aspects of the new feature is precisely the form factor of the Galaxy Z lineup. Unlike a traditional smartphone, which almost always requires an external stand, the new foldables can be positioned autonomously on the desk.
Specifically, Galaxy Z Flip 8 can be used in a semi-open position, acting as an integrated stand while Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra can instead be placed in ‘tent’ mode or upright, facilitating framing during video calls.
The feature was initially introduced with the Galaxy S26 series equipped with One UI 8.5, while now it arrives on the new generation of foldable smartphones, allowing the cameras of the lineup to be used also in desktop contexts.
