Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max will have an external 1″ telephoto lens, with 10x zoom

Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition could peek out alongside an external camera module, a telephoto lens to pair with the smartphone. It’s an idea that would bring the phone even closer to the world of cameras, already widely explored by various brands (such as Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo) but that makes this special edition particularly intriguing.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition and the Ruiying Z10 external telephoto

According to the leakers Bald Panda and Smart Pikachu, the module would be called Huawei Ruiying Z10 and would have a sensor with a size of 1″. The physical focal length would range from 9.1 to 91 mm, equal to 24-240 mm equivalent, for a 10x optical zoom.

The module would feature an aperture variable from f/2.0 to f/4.5; moreover it should even include a Red Maple sensor, presenting itself more as an additional optical system rather than a simple accessory.

The specifications of the Collector’s Edition

Even without an external module, the photographic department would be no slouch. The Collector’s Edition would have a 200 MP periscope telephoto with a 1/1.28″ sensor and a main camera of 50 MP, also 1/1.28″, with a variable aperture, as well as an infrared coating to reduce reflections.

Under the hood there would be the Kirin 9050 Pro chip and 16 GB of RAM, with a battery of 6,800 mAh and 100W charging. The display would be a dual-layer OLED with 1.5K resolution, an LTPO variable refresh rate from 1 to 144 Hz and a peak brightness of around 10,000 nits.

The Mate 90 series, model by model

The Collector’s Edition is only part of a range that, according to leaks in recent weeks, looks set to be quite elaborate. What would distinguish the models, even before the cameras, would be primarily the processor.

For the base Mate 90 model, one of the configurations hypothesized by leaks envisions the Kirin 9030 Pro, a 9-core chip up to 2.75 GHz; this is the same chipset as Mate 80 Pro Max (last year’s flagship).

Mate 90 Pro should debut a new chip, the Kirin 9035. According to the leaker FixedFocus on Weibo it would be exclusive to this model and would keep the same internal architecture of the Kirin 9030 family, but with higher clock frequencies and, perhaps, lower power consumption.

Mate 90 Pro Max would instead target the Kirin 9050 Pro, fresh on the market with a 9-core structure (1 Prime core, 2 Performance, 4 Efficiency and 2 Little) based on Tau Scaling Law technology and the LogicFolding design.

Finally, there remains some doubt about the Mate 90 RS Ultimate’s chip: the Kirin 9050 Pro was considered a given, but the latest rumors have challenged this as well.

When the Mate 90 series arrives

Huawei has not yet announced the presentation event for the Mate 90 series. Based on the leaks so far, the series’ debut in China is set for September 29, but for the moment there is still no confirmation from the tech giant.
